Phoenix monsoon storms are unlike rainfall anywhere else. A single storm can dump 2–3 inches in under an hour, overwhelming storm drains and municipal sewer systems. When capacity is exceeded, sewage backs up through floor drains, toilets, and showers — causing damage that averages $7,000–$15,000 to remediate.

Expansive soils compound the problem. Phoenix's caliche and clay soils expand when saturated, putting pressure on underground pipes and foundations. Repeated wet-dry cycles during monsoon season cause soil movement that cracks sewer lines and shifts slab foundations — often leading to hidden leaks that aren't discovered until the water bill spikes.

Prevention costs a fraction of repair. A pre-season plumbing inspection runs $200–$400 and covers sewer camera inspection, backflow valve testing, and drainage assessment. Compare that to the average monsoon-related plumbing emergency at $4,500. Most damage is preventable with basic preparation.

Timing matters. The best window for monsoon prep is late May through mid-June — before the season officially begins June 15th. Plumbers are less booked and can address issues proactively rather than in emergency mode during a storm.
